..INSECT GREETING CARDS..

This card and many others are available from:
https://www.redbubble.com/shop/insect+greeting-cards

WHY NOT MAKE YOUR OWN?

You can make your own cards by copying and pasting then printing on light cardboard folded once or a sheet of paper folded into fourths. Another idea is to glue one of your cards on the folded cardboard.  If you want to be more creative you could use a cutout bug or fold a paper spring attached to a bug cutout folded inside. You  also could cut four diagonal slits. One on each corner to hold your card in place. Along with the card, you might include some edible insects.

Have you thought of making your own "business" cards with an interesting bug?

There are sheets that you can put in your printer to make transfers for t-shirts.

............BUGS ARE MIGRATING NORTHWARD...

300,000 new cases, and it’s getting worse every year

| Exploding tick population could become full blown health crisis

| Daily News – A congressional advisory committee is warning that tick-related diseases could become an impending catastrophic crisis.

Lyme disease and other tick-related ailments are “a serious and growing threat to public health,” blared the report findings.

The Tick-Borne Disease Working Group, whose objective is controlling this public crisis, is recommending prevention, surveillance, diagnosis and treatment measures, reported CNN.

“As tick populations continue to grow and infected ticks expand geographically, the threat to human health intensifies,” reads the report.

There are at least 20 different tick-related illnesses, including the most common Lyme disease.

Approximately 300,000 Americans suffer from the ailment each year and, more alarming, researchers are discovering new illnesses linked to the tiny arachnids.

A majority of Lyme disease sufferers who get early treatment fully recover but about 20% of victims experience persistent symptoms including headaches, muscle and joint aches, swollen lymph nodes, rashes, chills and fever.
Since 2004, Lyme disease cases have doubled, according to the report.
The Northeast and North Central states are experiencing the biggest proliferation.
The group’s findings indicate the spread is due, in part, “to ecological changes taking place in North America since the middle of the 20th century, including habitat and climate changes.
Lyme disease is transmitted by infected deer ticks, Western blacklegged ticks and lone star ticks. Read more.

.........MOSQUITOES SPREAD MANY DISEASES ..

Mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia bacteria, which makes them unable to transmit viruses, has stopped all outbreaks of dengue fever in a city in northern Australia.

Mosquitoes are also infecting people with West Nile disease in upper state New York.

There is great fear that anti-malaria drugs are becoming less effective and other means must be taken to stop the spread of the disease.

"Despite their poor public image, wasps are incredibly important for the world’s economy and ecosystems. Without them, the planet would be pest-ridden to biblical proportions, with much-reduced biodiversity. They are a natural asset of a world dominated by humans, providing us with free services that contribute to our economy, society, and ecology."

WHY YOU SHOULD NOT KILL SPIDERS IN YOUR HOUSE

"These arachnids are usually secretive, and almost all you meet are neither aggressive nor dangerous. And they may be providing services like eating pests – some even eat other spiders."

GERMAN SUPERMARKET SELLS BURGERS MADE FROM WORMS

"Germany start-up Bugfoundation produces burgers made from buffalo worms, which are already being sold for both animal and human consumption. Baris Özel, the co-founder of the start-up that, says he worked on the idea for four years. Along with fellow co-founder Max Krämer, the two were inspired by South-Eastern Asian culture, where it’s not uncommon to eat insects."

Many insects and vipers are used to make medicines.  Can you name some and the afflictions for which they are treatments?

Tarantulas are hairy spiders and very interesting some people (brave!) keep them as pets. National Geographic Kids has an excellent article with a good picture.
